Decimals

Decimals:

A decimal is a fraction written in a special form. They have 10, 100, 1000, ... as the denominator. For example 1/2 can be expressed as the decimal 0.5, where the zero is in the ones place and the five is in the tenths place. The word Decimal comes from the Latin word decimus, meaning tenth, from the root word dece,or 10.

Decimal number can be defined as a number whose whole number part and the fractional part is separated by a decimal point. The dot in a decimal number is called a decimal point. The digits following the decimal point show a value smaller than one.In decimal form, it is 0.1. Hundredth means 1/100.

For example in 12.35

12 is the whole part and 35 is the decimal part.

12.35 is pronounced as twelve point three five.
